Thakhani Masuka is a member of Blind SA’s Executive
Committee serving as the Vice President of the organisation. In June 2024 he
was appointed by the Minister of Department of Communication and digital
Technology to serve as a Council Member of the B-BBEE Information Communication
Technology Sector Charter Council, and he is serving as a representative of
Blind SA & The south African Disability Alliance (SADA). The two
organisations demonstrated full confidence in him as he reaches and embarks on
these new leadership roles. He is currently an employee of UNISA working in the
Department of Leadership and Transformation.
Thakhani Masuka has served as the national chairperson of
Unisa Association of students with disabilities, a position he held from 2016
to 2019. It is through this role wherein
he was able to fight for a reasonable academic accommodation of students with
disabilities.
Acquiring his qualifications in politics has enabled him to
comprehend the burning need to pursue the agenda of Disability Transformation.
As an activist both personally & professionally, he found it important to
have adequate political intellect in order to effectively tackle issues around
discriminatory practices perpetuated against persons with disabilities. He also
fights for fair allocation of equal economic opportunities and academic access
for persons with disabilities.
. As he has experienced numerous challenges pertaining to his difficult road to obtain his qualifications caused by poor services to students with disabilities, one of the principles Thakhani lives by is: It does not matter how difficult you go, what matters is to keep walking in the journey that will lead you to success despite the setbacks.
